Windows 8 E-Readers Coming?
0Microsoft is planning to get serious about tablets. Windows 8 tablets are expected to hit the market in the next few months. But does Microsoft have its eyes on the e-book reader market? That’s what Kevin Turner, Microsoft’s COO, has hinted at:
Microsoft will be this year the first company on the planet to have a consistent UI from the smart phone to the tablet to the slate, to the reader to the rich client and to the TV with our Metro UI… We know the power of getting that consistent user experience is something our whole product portfolio will benefit from.
Assuming that Windows 8 runs on ARM chips, this could very well happen. Microsoft has been in the sidelines watching Apple and other companies sell millions of tablets and e-readers in the past couple of years. It would not be a surprise to see the company aiming to bring Windows 8 to e-readers too.
Does it matter if Windows 8 runs on e-readers? Probably not. Those of us who own those e-ink Kindles and NOOKs don’t really care too much about the underlying platform (unless you are a hacker and enjoy hacking e-readers). It will still be interesting to see whether this happens in the upcoming months.
