Tablet PCs Help Users with Vision Loss Read Faster
0We have been critical of tablet PCs for being too distracting in the past. But every year that goes by, more people get used to the idea of using their slates to read e-books on the go. As it turns out, tablet PCs could actually make some of us better readers. According to a recent study, people with damaged central vision can regain the ability to read faster and conveniently using digital tablets. The study showed that people with moderate vision loss may improve their reading speed by 15 wpm.
The research will be presented at the 116th Annual Meeting of the American Academy of Ophthalmology. Before digital tablets, doctors relied on low vision aids to help their patients with these eye diseases read more conveniently. Tablets such as the iPad are changing that. The iPad’s back-illuminated screen helps those folks with their reading.
People with better visions still prefer print though. But it is nice to see devices such as the iPad making a real difference in people’s lives.
