Qualcomm’s Mirasol E-Reader To Debut
0We have been waiting for quite some time to see the rise of Mirasol e-readers. Many of us are used to mono E-ink e-readers. But there is no question color e-book readers are in the cards for all e-book addicts. Qualcomm has been investing in Mirasol technology since 2004. The company has joined hands with Kyobo Book Center to bring a color e-reader to the Korean market. Kyobo’s e-reader will have a 5.7 inch screen and can go for weeks without needing to be charged. Best of all, it can display e-books in color.
Like E-ink, Mirasol is a bistable technology. That is how e-readers using it can go for a couple of weeks on a single battery charge. Just like E-ink e-readers, Mirasol devices will perform quite well under sunlight. Let’s make no mistake about it. The Mirasol technology has a lot of potential. But people are not used to paying a fortune for e-readers. Qualcomm’s challenge is to bring the cost of its technology lower for e-reader makers to adopt it. The U.S. market needs to wait a few more months for Mirasol devices to make their way to this side of the world. But this is a very exciting development already.
