NOOKcolor Details Revealed
1The cat is out of the bag. B&N has revealed the details of its latest generation e-book reader, nookColor. It is a 7 inch color display e-book reader with touch-screen capability. The e-ink screen is gone, but B&N seems to have done its best to reduce potential glare by adding a “full lamination screen film” on the top of the LCD screen. The good news is e-book fans are going to have more fun reading on nookcolor’s 16 million color, 1024 x 600 IPS display. The device will support WiFi (802.11b/g/n) and features 8GB of storage. The battery life takes a huge hit (only 8 hours with WiFi off).
nook Color may look shiny but it does pack a lot of features too. Here are a few to be excited about:
- wide viewing angle of 178° — makes reading possible from all kinds of angles.
- support for portrait and landscape viewing
- support for color magazines, newspapers, and of course books
- AliveTouch™ technology: making it easy for the young ones to interact with their books.
- Read-To-Me feature
- LendMe App: now you can lend books to others and ask them to lend you one!
- Nookfriends: social reading meets nook.
- Twitter & Facebook integration
- new improved interface — can be personalized.
- nook games, including chess
- support for Microsoft Office files
- memory expansion through microSD
- Nook Developer program
While our team believes that B&N abandoning e-ink was a mistake, the company seems to have developed a very powerful device for e-book addicts who don’t mind using an LCD-based ebook reader. The Nook Developer Program is very exciting and should give Nook fans the ability to bring their own Android applications to their favorite tablet. The bad news for B&N? We have been hearing all kinds of rumors about Amazon developing a very similar device to this one. Add to that the fact that Amazon is starting an Android App Store, and nook color could be in trouble in a fairly short period of time.
nookColor will sell for $249 and is expected to ship starting November 19th.
