Nook Tablet Firmware Update 1.4.1: 3rd Party Apps Gone?
0Just a few hours ago, we reported on a recent Kindle Fire update that could cause trouble for rooted Kindle Fire units. B&N has also issued an update that closes a loophole that allowed NOOK owners to install third-party apps on their device. The firmware update, version 1.4.1, turns your NOOK Tablet back to what it was meant to be all along: a color e-book reader with extras.
It is interesting to note that the new update does not actually delete your old apps. It just does not let you install new third-party apps on your NOOK tablet. B&N does seem to be shooting itself in the foot by being too protective of what can be installed on its tablet (could be for legal reasons). The company intends to maximize its revenue from each tablet sold. But one of the big reasons people gave the NOOK tablets a chance was the fact they were easy to hack. It will be interesting to see whether companies such as Amazon or B&N change their policies in regards to third party Android apps in the future.
