LG Introduces Flexible Plastic E-Paper
0The e-paper devices such as Kindle and NOOK have come a long way in the past couple of years. The prices have come down and the quality has gone up. But these devices are not perfect. Flexible e-paper solutions are certainly an upgrade over what is available to consumers today. LG has made no secret of its interest in flexible displays in the past. The company has now announced a 6 inch display to take e-readers to the next level. This plastic display can bend at an angle up to 40 degrees. It is super thin and weight only 14 grams (0.5 ounces).
We have seen flexible OLED solutions in the past. So the idea here is not revolutionary. But flexible displays could breathe a whole new life to the e-reader market. There seems no doubt that tablets and smartphones of the future will have flexible displays. The above mentioned display has passed drop tests from 1.5m above the ground, so it is pretty durable.
It will take e-reader makers a bit of time to bring e-readers with flexible displays to the market. Flexible displays are not perfect yet. So challenges lie ahead for LG and other companies involved in this space.
