Kindle Gets Japanese Support, Apple Defends iPad Mini Pricing
0It is no secret that Amazon is pushing Kindle into Japan. The Japanese Kindle store opened a couple of days ago. Folks in Japan will now be able to order a Kindle Fire or Paperwhite from the site. To prepare for this new market, Amazon has added Japanese support to Kindle for Android and iOS. The Android version of the app also provides better support for Android 4.1 and the Nexus 7 tablet. It also makes sending PDF, DOC, DOCX, and image files via share buttons easier.
The iOS version of Kindle has also been updated to provide support for the Japanese language. It has new font choices and offers X-Ray for texts. Both updates are now available through the App Store and Google Play Store.
Speaking of new products, the iPad mini is the latest gadget by Apple to target the tablet PC and e-book reader market. Many have been criticizing Apple’s decision to charge $329 for the device. Apple could have certainly delivered a big blow to Android tablets with a $249 tablet. Apple’s management team is not concerned by all the criticism though:
The iPad is far and away the most successful product in its category. The most affordable product we’ve made so far was $399 and people were choosing that over those devices … And now you can get a device that’s even more affordable at $329 in this great new form, and I think a lot of customers are going to be very excited about that,
explained Phil Schiller. Apple seems to believe that it has gotten the pricing strategy right. Let’s make no mistake here. Some people will gladly pay $329 for the iPad mini. Is it worth that price? Did Apple choose the right pricing strategy? Answers to those questions are not clear.
