Kindle For iPad In the Works
0It’s official. Amazon is bringing its popular Kindle app to iPad. There were talks about the company avoiding the platform or Apple putting some restrictions on the app. Apple and Amazon seem to have decided to play ball. With the iPad coming out soon, app companies are in a rat race to get their apps ready for the device for day one.
According to NY Times, Amazon and B&N both will be hoping to release their apps for iPad soon. That means e-book fans can get the iPad and get the best of both worlds. It doesn’t help that both companies didn’t get an iPad ahead of time:Amazon.com and Barnes & Noble are working on apps for buying and reading electronic books, even though both companies sell their own e-reading devices and Apple will offer its own iBooks app. The expectation is that the iPad will give a big lift to the e-book market, benefiting the whole industry. Neither company was given an iPad for testing.
Amazon seems to be excited about the possibility. According to Ian Freed, VP of Kindle at Amazon, the Kindle team has had “fun” with the app. This is a great move if you are an e-book fan. Apple may have not created a universal platform for e-books, but it has created a device that every other top dog wants to be on. For Amazon and B&N, the iPad gives them the opportunity to reach out to more people and sell more e-books. In the meantime, Apple may have already scored a big first round against other top e-book readers on the market.
All is not rosy between Apple and Amazon. While Amazon is strong-arming publishers to agree to offer their lowest prices on Amazon, Apple is asking publishers to do the same through iBooks. So the e-book price wars have just started. However it all turns out, e-book junkies have a lot to be excited about.
