E-Book Apps Back On The iPad
0Many e-book fans went into the state of panic yesterday as e-book apps on iPad got crippled by Apple. In fact, Google Books completely disappeared from the App Store. Amazon and B&N are not willing to share 30% of their revenue with Apple. That does not mean that they are ready to leave the platform altogether. iPad owners won’t be able to buy books from within these apps anymore. These stores are now only open for business through Safari on iPad or iPhone.
The new rules do not just apply to e-book sellers. Spotify has also announced that it has become compliant with App Store’s new policy. News Corp is certainly not happy with these new developments:
We remain concerned that Apple’s own subscription [rules] would create a poor experience for our readers, who would not be able to directly manage their WSJ account or to easily access our content across multiple platforms,
explained a News Corp spokesperson. Many iPad and iPhone owners are going to find these latest app updates to be quite annoying. Amazon for its part has included over 100 magazines and newspapers in its new Kindle app, which subscribers can download to their device when they are ready. B&N is planning to add the same capability to its app:
Millions of iOS device owners have downloaded our free NOOK apps, and with our upcoming NOOK for iPad update our customers will have access to one of the largest digital collections of interactive magazines and top newspapers through a highly advanced, seamless reading experience
It will be interesting to see how many people will avoid picking up iPads due to this new change.
Your take: is App Store’s new content policy a deal breaker for you?
