B&N to Sell Its Publishing Division?
0B&N is behind some of the most popular tablets and e-readers. The company was always going to be an underdog against Amazon considering how early Amazon entered the e-reader business. According to a leak by the Wall Street Journal, B&N is looking for possible buyers for its publishing division. It is interested in focusing more on its NOOK product line and core retail businesses.
B&N has been in the publishing business for a few decades. It did pay around $115m to acquire Sterling in 2003. Sterling publishes nonfiction titles in categories such as puzzles, games, cooking, and children’s books. Given that, a number of publishers may be interested in acquiring Sterling. At this point, it is not clear how much money B&N can get for Sterling.
Barnes & Noble has been trying to become more efficient in its operations in the past couple of years. With all the pressure Amazon and other players in the e-book business are putting on it, B&N will have to continue pushing hard. Focusing more on its NOOK business is a good way to do just that.
