Amazon Testing Its Wireless Network

Amazon is not your old book seller anymore. The company has come a long way over the years and is aggressively pursuing its content strategy. As Bloomberg has reported, Amazon seems to be exploring a wireless network of its own. The tests are taking place in Amazon’s Lab126 research facility, using spectrum controlled by Globalstar. GlobalStar is currently in the process of getting approval to use its satellite spectrum to handle WiFi services. Multiple companies could potentially lease its services.

Amazon is not the only company to explore its own wireless network. Google is ahead of the pack in that area. This is not a project that could happen in the next few months but is a part of Amazon’s long-term strategy to stay competitive. The approach will allow Amazon to gain even more control over the experience it offers to customers. Lots of work to be done before it gets there though.
