Amazon Sued Over Kindle In-App Purchases
0The Federal Trade Commission is suing Amazon for not having done enough to prevent children from making unauthorized in-app purchases. Considering that Amazon was unwilling to settle with the FTC, the move was expected. The unauthorized charges in question were between 99 cents and $99 per consumer, usually involving virtual items in games and apps. Parents were billed without their consent, so the FTC is going after Amazon to prevent future cases.
The FTC has already settled with Apple over this very same issue. It is also going after T-Mobile for putting unauthorized charges on phone bills. Amazon is planning to fight this for now:
We have continuously improved our experience since launch, but even at launch, when customers told us their kids had made purchases they didn’t want we refunded those purchases
It will be interesting to see how this turns out. But considering the precedence, a settlement may be on the horizon.
