Ebooks Slower To Read Than Paper Books?

e-Books can take a bit of time to get used to, especially if one has not read too many e-books in the past. According to a study by Nielsen Norman Group, e-books could in fact be slower to read than paper books for a lot of folks. As the study indicated, out of 24 people who read a short story by Ernest Hemingway, those using an iPad were 6.2 percent slower. Those readers using Amazon Kindle were 10.7 slower.
It is tough to read too much into this information without further research. It is highly possible that some people find these e-book readers distracting. It is also possible that some folks have a deeper reading experience with e-books than regular books. After all, e-books do take a bit of getting used to. That’s why companies such as Amazon are adopting the next generation e-ink technology to bring a more realistic reading experience to their customers.
Apple iPad may be distracting. Amazon Kindle may need some more work. Once people get used to reading on these devices, the drop in speed should not be significant.
