Kindle DX International Release Date Announced

Kindle DX has finally gone international too. We did know a while ago that Amazon had plans to take Kindle DX global as well. I also went on to claim that Amazon will pick the right time to make the move to take some eyes off of what others are doing in this space. CES 2010 is only a day away and Plastic Logic e-reader and many other innovative gadgets are expected to be announced at the event. So Amazon gets to put Kindle back in people’s minds just before the event. It’s a nice move by Amazon to remind others who’s boss. Of course, we hope Amazon has more exciting news for us (in regards to Kindle 3) in the near future.
Kindle DX global will be officially released on Jan 19, 2010. Of course, you can order to “reserve your place in line.” But this announcement will be the end of an era for us Kindle fans. Amazon doesn’t seem to have any new Kindles planned with its original partner, Sprint. Kindle 1 and 2 both took advantage of Amazon Whispernet that was brought to us by Sprint. AT&T has taken over that task now.
Needless to say, I am not a big fan of the international flavors of Kindle. There are just too many fees that you need to keep in mind, and you can still read in other countries as long as you have your original Kindle. Since Kindle DX was designed with students and business individuals in mind, it does make sense to offer the international service for it. A price drop would have been the icing on the cake. It’s about time Amazon dropped Kindle DX’s price.
