Early Thoughts on Kindle Fire HDX 8.9″
0During this weekend, we had the chance to play around with a new Kindle HDX 8.9“. It runs the same software as the smaller Kindle HDX but does offer a better camera and longer battery life. The device is perfect for consuming Amazon content but it is not perfect by any means. We are not sure it gives you the best bang for buck. The new Kindle HDX:
- is fast: the device is quite fast and more than capable of handling apps, games, and anything else you throw at it. We got a very smooth experience on it.
- looks good but…: the new Kindle Fire HDX 8.9″ looks good but it feels like a budget tablet next to the iPad Air. For a $379 device, we expected a better looking tablet. Not that it’s a deal breaker.
- runs Android apps but…: you can run Google Play apps on Kindle devices. The process is not particularly hard but something we could do without. Not all Google Play apps run smoothly on Kindles.
- is mainly a consumption device: Amazon claims the Kindle Fire HDX is the best business and personal tablet out there. We are not sure that is true. It has a lot going for it as a content consumption tablet. It is not an iPad killer though.
- is great for Amazon shoppers: if you spend every day shopping on Amazon, you are going to love the new Kindle HDX. For the rest of us, the upcoming Nexus 10 may be a better choice.
Should you get a Kindle Fire HDX 8.9″? It is really up to you. The device is not cheap but does offer great battery life and an amazing display.
